Tributes Pour In For Notary Anthony Spiteri Debono, Husband Of Malta’s President

Anthony Spiteri Debono, the husband of President Myriam Spiteri Debono, has passed away at the age of 78 due to health complications.

A notary by profession, Spiteri Debono was known for his humility, integrity, and dedication. Though he maintained a low profile throughout his wife’s political career, he remained a visible and constant support, frequently accompanying her during official events since her appointment as Malta’s Head of State in 2024.

The Office of the President confirmed his death and requested the public to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said Spiteri Debono was “a gentleman whose humility truly stood out”, adding that he never sought the spotlight but was always a great support to his wife and their family.

Nationalist Party leadership candidates Adrian Delia and Alex Borg also expressed their condolences, with Borg describing Spiteri Debono as “a man of few words but a great source of support to his wife and children.”

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola shared that she was “shocked and saddened” by the news and expressed gratitude for Spiteri Debono’s contribution during the Presidency.

Former PN leader Bernard Grech said he had contacted the President to offer his condolences, calling Spiteri Debono “authentic, humble and kind”.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett also paid tribute, highlighting Notary Anthony Spiteri Debono’s humility and wisdom. He recalled Spiteri Debono’s quiet strength and positive influence, saying he was fortunate to have crossed paths with him at a pivotal time in his life.

Lawyer Jason Azzopardi, a former classmate, described him as a “true gentleman” and “exemplary man and father”, while Minister Owen Bonnici wrote that Spiteri Debono “had a heart of gold” and was “humble, honest, and deeply loved his country”.

Justice Minister Jonathan Attard said he was saddened by the news and extended condolences to the President, their children Elena, George, and Maria Kristina, and the entire family. “May he rest in peace,” he wrote.

MP Miriam Dalli offered “sincere condolences to President Myriam Spiteri Debono and the entire family for the loss of Notary Anthony Spiteri Debono”.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said also shared a tribute: “Condolences to Her Excellency President Myriam Spiteri Debono on the loss of her husband, Dr Anthony Spiteri Debono. May he rest in peace.”

Rebecca Buttigieg, Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality, also expressed her condolences.
