Two illegal campers, including one who is already facing murder charges, have recently been charged in court after showing aggression towards Malta’s rangers.

The two individuals, Husam Saleh Belgasem Shalgom and Abungam Mohamed Abdulmajed, were charged by police with camping and setting up a charcoal BBQ in a protected area, as well as insulting the rangers who had intervened back in September 2022.

Saleh Belgasam Shalgom, born in Libya, is currently out on bail for the murder of Fouzi Farj Etwaish, who was stabbed to death in November 2017 in Birkirkara. He’s also out on bail for grievous bodily harm since 2021.

While Shalgom showed up for this week’s hearing related to insulting the rangers on duty, his lawyer didn’t, and the case has now been postponed to April, with a request for a protection order for the rangers also delayed until then.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Abdulmajed, who was already facing cases related to robbery and threatening a police officer, was handed a €400 fine.

Speaking with Lovin Malta, one of the rangers lamented that it’s crazy that someone who is facing murder charges cannot get a protection order sentence until the next hearing, which is more than three months away.

The rangers are also highlighting that they don’t usually take legal action for such minor offenses, but they decided to in this case because of the aggression that followed their intervention.

“The reason why we did so was because of the aggressive and drunk state he was in, with people already starting to come to the beach,” they said.

The rangers also thanked Malta’s Police Force for taking such prompt action, after they had to call for assistance when they noticed the campers were non-compliant.
