The UM Racing team has achieved a milestone at the IMeche Formula Student competition, becoming the first Maltese group to design, build and race an electric vehicle on the international stage.

Out of 120 UK and international competitors, only 59 managed to take part in the dynamic racing events, with just 24 successfully passing scrutineering – the technical, regulation and safety checks required. UM Racing’s EV was among them.

Despite challenging conditions, including heavy rain throughout the weekend, the Maltese team completed the endurance race of 25 high-speed laps, placing 8th. Only 14 cars in total managed to finish the race.

In the overall competition, which combined both static and dynamic events, UM Racing secured a 9th-place finish – ranking ahead of several established UK and international teams.

Carrying the Maltese flag, the students said the event was not only a chance to compete but also to learn resilience, teamwork, and innovation under pressure.
