One of the divers who encountered difficulty while in Ċirkewwa earlier today has unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and died, the police revealed.

18 divers were found in distress in the sea in an area known as Rożi. The police, together with the armed forces were informed of the issue at around 1.20pm today and quickly went to the scene.

Four of the divers managed to get ashore while a rescue operation for the others began.

On the ground, several medical teams from Mater Dei Hospital started to assist the divers before they were rushed to hospital. One of them was unfortunately pronounced dead shortly after while the condition of the others is still pending. 

Police investigations are underway while Duty Magistrate Gabriella Vella has opened an inquiry.
