Watch: Alex Borg Warns Citizens Aren’t Feeling The Benefits Of Malta’s ‘Strong Economy’

Opposition Leader Alex Borg has warned that Maltese citizens are not feeling the benefits of the country’s “so-called strong economy”.

Speaking ahead of the presentation of the 2026 national budget, Borg said that although the slogan for Budget 2026 is A strong economy, a future for our children, many Maltese and Gozitans aren’t feeling its effects.

“A strong economy is not just numbers on a piece of paper. An economy that is performing well should mean a better life for the people. It should mean a quality life for everyone,” a press release penned by his party reads.

Borg reminded that the cost of living is increasing daily. Wages are not keeping up and many young people cannot become homeowners despite working tirelessly, going from one job to another: “And families are living pay cheque to pay cheque.”

Borg said that if the government truly wants a future for our children, it must run an economy that works for everyone, that creates quality jobs, and that looks towards sustainability, not slogans.

“While the Government attempts to give the impression that everything is going well, my daily meetings with people show me that the real challenge is not stating how much the economy has grown, but how this growth reaches everyone,” he continued.

Borg concluded by saying that the Nationalist Paryt believes in an economy with a heart; an economy that gives dignity, stability, and opportunity to every person and every family. “This must be the ultimate aim of those who shape our country’s policies.”
