After thousands of people flooded the square of Castille in Valletta last night, Prime Minister Robert Abela was chased by an angry mob upon his appearance at the vigil.

Emotions were high last night, as even after Abela’s government took a massive u-turn and announced a public inquiry into the 20-year-old’s death, thousands still gathered in Valletta to show their support for Jean Paul Sofia, his family and friends, and all the victims taken by Malta’s construction industry.

A few people did welcome Abela with open arms, however it only took a couple of seconds before a loud and angry crowd began to chase him down as police rushed to his aid.

Amidst jeers and shouts calling him “Purċinell”, Abela had to be escorted away from the scene by police and a small group of supporters as he was chased down towards the Parliament building.

And this was not the first instance. All throughout last night’s vigil, every single time Abela’s name was mentioned, the crowd erupted in loud boos.

Sofia’s mother Isabelle looked visibly uncomfortable, having to silence them and remind everyone that during the demonstration, there were no colours except “the colour of love”.

But before chaos ensued, many beautiful moments were shared among all the Maltese citizens who showed up in Valletta last night, showing a true display of strength in numbers.

Candles illuminated the square, as the crowd all took its turn to place the candles down in different areas, namely on the steps leading to Castille.

And during the national anthem which was sang acapella by the crowd, thousands of candles and flashlights were held high up in the sky for a moment of pure unity among the people of Malta.

Lovin Malta was also live from the scene during the vigil, with many people tuning in from across the globe. You can watch it here below:
