Watch: ‘Caritas Helped Me Heal’ – Maltese Man Shares Struggles With Homophobia And Addiction Ahead Of Fundraiser
A Maltese man, Roman, together with his sister Michelle, have opened up on his struggles with homophobia and drug addiction from a young age, ahead of the upcoming Caritas Marathon this weekend.
Touching upon how he was bullied for being gay from a young age – from being called “pufta” at school, to being spat on – Roman shared how he started abusing of drugs from the tender age of seventeen.
The feature starts out with his older sister Michelle expressing her love for her brother, while recounting the moment that she found out that he was using drugs.
“At the age of seventeen, I had already started,” Roman said.
“He struggled so much, from when he was at a young age. He struggled a lot in silence,” his sister Michelle said.
“Especially at school, they didn’t used to treat me well… they used to call me names, and spit in my face, in those times calling someone ‘pufta’ was common,” Roman expressed.
But even though Roman was bullied from a young age over his sexuality, he always found support from his family, and when the time came that he needed to seek out help, they encouraged him to do so.
“The love that we have between us is massive,” his sister says.
The interview continues on to feature the exact moment that Roman decided to seek out help from Caritas, where he decided to embark on a programme at San Blas, Gozo.
“I can only heal with Caritas,” Roman had told his sister.
Finishing on an emotional note, Roman thanks everyone who was part of his journey, especially his loved ones, and sent them his words of appreciation and an ask for forgiveness.
“Caritas means a lot to me, it helped us a lot, it’s everything for us,” Michelle said. “They do it all with a big love towards their residents.”
“Caritas is everything for me, it is my life,” Roman said.
The touching interview comes ahead of Caritas’ upcoming fundraising marathon ‘Jimpurtani’ which is happening this Saturday 9th November from 11am to 11pm.
