Watch: ‘Dangerous’ Roadworks Leave Qawra Trenches Exposed, Trapping Cars

Roadworks in Qawra have left trenches exposed for a number of days, causing cars to get trapped in the uncovered holes.

“This is how we have to live in Triq l-Istamnar. Dangerous and no health and safety,” a resident told Lovin Malta.

Footage sent to the newsroom by Dave Hayward shows exposed trenches running through the road with just portions of the obstruction covered by slabs. Meanwhile, accompanying photos show cars stuck in the parts of the gaping hole that remain exposed.

According to Hayward, multiple complaints have been issued, yet the street has been the same for “over a week”.

St Paul’s Bay mayor Alfred Grima told Lovin Malta that “the trenching work is not the responsibility of the local council, but that of Enemalta”.

“The contractor handling the works was notified more than once by the local council and Enemalta itself was made aware of the situation,” Grima continued.

“The council itself cannot just pop up and stop the works of an Enemalta contractor because this would then mean that the council is shouldering the responsibility of any incident that would have or could potentially occur, when this is, in reality, the responsibility of Enemalta.”
