On the eve of the Annual Conference of the Council of Europe’s Equality Commission, Speaker of the House Anġlu Farrugia, together with the Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, Rebecca Buttigieg, inaugurated an exhibition at the Parliament building titled “Leħinha. Her Voice.”

The Annual Conference of the Council of Europe’s Equality Commission is being held in Malta as part of the Maltese Presidency of the Council of Europe.

The exhibition documents the historical journey of Maltese women in politics and the ongoing efforts to achieve gender equality in political representation. It aligns with the central theme of the Council of Europe’s conference, taking place in Malta, which focuses on overcoming key obstacles to increasing women’s participation in politics, including sexism and psychological violence directed at women in political life.

Buttigieg emphasised that “this exhibition is a testament to resilience, progress, and strength in participation. It shows how Maltese women rowed against the current and overcame every obstacle because they believed that yes, even a woman has the right to be in public life and to serve the people through politics.”

She further added that “one can relive the history of women who, from the very beginning, had to fight for the right to vote, as well as those who succeeded in achieving high-ranking positions within Maltese institutions.”

Through historical photographs and information on key reforms, the exhibition reflects the challenges and progress experienced over the years in the advancement of women in local politics. These include the historic achievement of women’s right to vote, the first women to serve in major political roles, the introduction of the gender balance mechanism, and the contributions of women in Maltese politics.

The exhibition also features statistics on trends in women’s representation in Parliament, the Cabinet, Local Councils, and the European Parliament, as well as the impact of the gender corrective mechanism implemented for the first time in the 2022 general elections. This measure significantly increased the number of women elected to Parliament and strengthened women’s participation in public life.

Throughout the month of September, the public is invited to visit the exhibition at the Parliament building.
