Watch: Gender Equality In Parliament Would Have Taken ‘Ages’ Without Quota System, President Myriam Spiteri Debono Says

The gender quota system is a necessary mechanism in parliament to speed up equal representation that would’ve otherwise taken “ages”, Madame President Myriam Spiteri Debono told Lovin Malta in a recent interview.

She emphasised its necessity while admitting that somehow, people still don’t support it.

The president went on to explain that the performance of women in important positions weights heavier than that of men because often, one woman serves as a representation of all, “whether we like it or not”.

So now, the women who got elected through the amended law have to prove to “people out there” that this system has introduced new female politicians that are “worthy to be entrusted by the people”.

In the interview, the president also gave her views on rampant commercialisation on Malta’s streets as well as initiaves the government should consider to integrate migrants on the island.
