Watch: ‘Hear Us Out’ – Young Women Appeal For Authorities To Listen And Improve Quality Of Life
Young women addressing the country’s issues during a podcast have appealed for authorities to listen to youths and make sure they’re improving the level of quality of life in Malta.
The appeal was made during the latest episode of The SHE Word’s Young Women’s Edition, where four women with different backgrounds discussed the reasons as to why more young people are deciding to leave the island.
The show, Young Women Abroad, featured host Sasha Vella, Sam Vassallo, a local artist and writer, Martina Borg, who is a 17-year-old singer, and Jade Borg, a 19-year-old make-up artist.
“We’re complaining about the things everyone is complaining about… we want open space, we want a political system that represents us, we want a good quality of life where we’re not just ingesting fumes all the time and we can have a tree or two maybe without thinking they’re going to cut it down the next day…” Sam said.
“But we have the opportunity, because we’re young and we’re still mobile, that we can leave.”
“And we are leaving, and unless something changes right now, then it’s going to continue and we’re going to have a population that’s already aging that it’s going to be in crisis. And then what happens to Malta’s identity?”
“What is your message for authorities to tackle Malta’s issues?”
“Hear us out, please, full stop. Because that’s the thing, we’ve been saying this for quite some time now. This year especially I’ve been having the same conversations with different kinds of generations. As I said, it’s not just the young generation, it’s also the older generation that is just fed up with certain things,” Jade said.
“Hear us out and let’s work on it.”
“Listen, like really listen, stop working on a crisis management way of doing things, don’t wait until everybody leaves, until the majority of young people leave, deal with it right now,” Sam said.
“Understand that you serve us and not the other way round, and yeah, give us a seat at the table, and it doesn’t mean making 16-year-olds mayors, it means listening when the people say something, you listen,” Sam concluded.
