Illegal burning of a large quantity of garbage was spotted over the weekend thanks to efforts by the Malta Ranger Unit (MRU).

Since its inception, rangers have been working hard day and night to document a variety of illegalities occurring in Malta, with a focus on the Northern side of the island.

Two people, whose identity is still unknown at the time, were filmed setting carpets on fire in Qalet Marku. However, the MRU has gathered enough information to identify the perpetrators.

“At Qalet Marku, over 50 vehicles were seen driving on the actual garigue illegally. Several fires were kindled directly on garigue and garbage being burnt by several groups as well as severe littering,” the MRU said on Facebook.

“One group, in particular, was seen setting fire to several large carpets and then left the site immediately. The fire, which contained chemicals, had black smoke and the police were alerted.”

“The documented individual will now face fines as per SL 549.40 (incorrect disposal of waste) as well as the Clean Air Act Cap 200 for the black smoke fire left unattended.”

Before nightfall, the rangers documented a number of illegalities which are now being reported to the Environmental Protection Unit Police (ERPU).

Thanking police for their efforts, the MRU once again reminds people that while kindling a fire can be done responsibly, it’s important to know that when a fire has been done in an allowed area, no one should see any trace of it. The fire should always be elevated and done using logs.

However, with that being said, the burning of garbage is strictly illegal all over the islands.

Have you ever spotted such illegalities in Malta’s countryside?
