Watch: ‘It’s Heavy’ – Disappointed Neil Agius Speaks Out On Being Stung Around 60 Times In Heartbreaking Statement
Ultra-endurance swimmer Neil Agius has spoken out for the first time since having no choice but to abandon the 100-mile swim due to a swarm of jellyfish.
His first statement after pulling out of his world record attempt 100-Mile Swim bore the true pressure and scale of the Maltese legend’s disappointment, as he explained that “Nature decided otherwise” after he sustained four long hours of painful jellyfish stings.
The swim was called off in the early hours of last night, just before 4am, nearly 19 hours into Neil’s swim.
“There were just too many jellyfish for too many hours,” the former Olympian said, sharing snippets from the dark and painful final leg of the swim.
“I’m full of stings everywhere. I didn’t feel like it made sense to continue at this point. I couldn’t.”
“I felt I could do this forever, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be this time. And everything was going so well. It’s just a pity, if I wasn’t capable of doing it or I was exhausted, but like this, it’s heavy.”
In a video that was just released, his partner can also be heard recounting how the jellyfish were lighting up every time they stung him. “They were just too many of them.”
Despite this, today’s news is a tiny blip in an ocean of insane accomplishments for Neil Agius, and all of Malta is still so incredibly proud of its superhuman swimmer
And knowing Neil, this is by far not the last we’ve heard of him, with an accompanying statement already finishing in a determined “I will be back”.
Well done Neil, you’ve made Malta proud!
