Internationally beloved local tenor, Joseph Calleja, believes that Maltese politicians and ministers are not paid enough for their job.

Calleja brought up this controversial belief on the ‘Ricky Caruana Podcast’, where the host agreed with him and said that they should be entitled to at least €250,000 annually. The former’s main argument rested on the fact that they work seven days a week, even on holidays and the attention they get from the people.

Calleja elaborated on the last point by using a personal example. He said that due to Malta’s size, you are bound to be recognised by someone even at a supermarket. He shared stories of when people stopped him to ask for pictures even when he was dressed down, saying that it will be far worse for these politicians.

This argument has been brought up many times, saying that if politicians are reimbursed more, there would be more interested in joining the industry. Whereas others say that politicians shouldn’t been incentivised by money.

People expressed themselves in the comments saying that besides their pay, the interview neglected the benefits that ministers have and that they most likely do not work on holidays. Some pointed out the fact that workers in the hospitality sector, such as restaurants also work long hours and during holidays.
