Although dangerous, the critter moves with grace – a smooth criminal.

The amalgamation of a snake and a jellyfish was reported all over Malta just a few days ago when renowned local marine biologist Alan Deidun warned the public of the creature, which is actually a colony of stinging cells known as a siphonophore.

The species has invaded all Maltese waters, with sightings in Ċirkewwa, Mistra, Birżebbuġa, and Marsaxlokk.

”The species in question could be Forskalia edwardsii and it can reach a total length of 10 metres,” Deidun says.

The close relative to the Portuguese Man o’War is almost transparent and stays close to the water’s surface.
