Watch: Maltese Honey Bee Marks First Anniversary As Malta’s National Insect
The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee celebrated a special milestone on 24th September with the release of the song “In-Naħla u Sħabha” meaning “The bee and her friends”.
This is the third and final song in its popular educational trilogy. The release coincides with the first anniversary of the Maltese Honey Bee being officially recognised as Malta’s National Insect, a significant achievement led by the Foundation.
The song, written and composed by Michael Piscopo with educational guidance from Professor Suzanne Piscopo, and performed by Claire Marie Busuttil, is designed for children aged five to eight. It offers an engaging and age-appropriate resource for early primary education, combining entertainment with learning about the importance of the Maltese Honey Bee.
This release is part of the initiative “Discovering the Maltese Honey Bee: Education Through Songs and Rhymes”.
Funding for the song was provided through the Small Initiatives Support Scheme (SIS), managed by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and financed by the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector (MIV). The accompanying video, produced by Michael Piscopo, was supported by the HSBC Malta Foundation.
The project brings Malta’s six national species to life in a fun, educational, and visually engaging way, creating a unique platform to foster awareness, curiosity, and appreciation of the island’s natural heritage among young learners.
The project is proudly coordinated by the Foundation’s founders, Dylan Farrugia and Abner Joe Buttigieg, and is set to become a lasting educational resource for families and schools across Malta and Gozo.
