Two factories in the Ħal Far Industrial Zone experienced a “major” fire on Friday night, and from a distance, a huge black plume could be seen floating across the sky over the southern part of Malta.

The Civil Protection Department (CPD) responded to the emergency call immediately and brought the fire under control by 12.45am earlier this morning. The CPD advised the public to avoid the area due to safety concerns.

Police were also called on site and started their investigations after the site was deemed safe enough by the CPD.

An eye-witness informed Times of Malta that the fire broke out directly behind the BIM Factory close to the Playmobil Funpark.

Luckily, no injuries were sustained. However, the CPD operations are still ongoing.

In a post on Facebook, the CPD went on to thank the Malta Police Force, the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department, Malta International Airport Fire Section, Transport Malta, the CPD Volunteers, the Emergency Fire and Rescue Unit ant the ST John Ambulance and Rescue Malta for their ongoing assistance in the operation.
