Watch: MCAST Students Protest After Exams Get Cancelled
MCAST students had their exams cancelled due to strict Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) directives.
In response, students from different classes left their classrooms to convey a message to the government that this is just the beginning if the directives remain in place.
“Teachers are demanding equal work for equal pay; however, the government isn’t engaging in discussions with them, resulting in the strike where students are left without marks. Third-year students won’t graduate after writing their theses, and no support line will answer the students in need,” a press release penned by MCAST Student representative Jordan Galea Pace reads.
“As a student representative, I guarantee that no student’s future will be uncertain due to Robert Abela’s stubbornness.”
Galea Pace posted a video of himself and fellow students urging the MUT and the government to “discuss like the adults they’re supposed to be”.
He mentioned that this is the “second time” the MUT and the government do not want to decide or discuss, explaining that the students have been deprioiritised once again.
The union released directives that push educators to withhold marks from students and to leave third years with looming theses deadlines without supervisors who can help.
“Students are being left in uncertainty because of the government’s hard head that doesn’t want to decide and discuss with MUT. The only thing they want is equal work and equal pay.”
What do you think the government should do?
