Watch: Migrants Should Be Financially Incentivised To Attend Maltese Language Lessons, New President Says
Maltese President Myriam Spiteri Debono suggested that migrants should be financially incentivised to attend lessons of the country’s mother tongue to help with integration.
Speaking with Lovin Malta, Spiteri Debono reiterated the importance that the issue of migration bears on the country, repeating her call for initiatives to improve migration.
One of these includes after-work lessons of Maltese, “even if they are incentivised,” she said.
When asked what type of incentives that Malta could provide, she cheekily remarked: “The incentive most people understand, whether they are native or migrant, is a monetary incentive.”

Besides this, Spiteri Debono explained the importance that the Church and other religious denominations have when it comes to helping with the integration of foreign nationals.
Meanwhile, she praised the parliament’s recently-passed law that regulates the number of people able to live in apartments according to their size.
“Hopefully, these rules are enforced,” she added.
