Ultra-endurance athlete and activist Fabio Spiteri has spoken out over the state that his pets have been left in amid the 16-hour (and counting) blackout being experienced in Birkirkara.

Taking to his social media platform, Spiteri posted a video of one of his dogs desperately gasping for air as it is being cooled with a wet towel, while the other three can be seen panting on the floor.

“My animals have all overheated, I’m placing wet towels over them to make sure they don’t die,” Spiteri said online, while tagging Minister for Energy Miriam Dalli and Prime Minister Robert Abela.

Speaking with Lovin Malta, Spiteri detailed how the walls of the penthouse he lives in, together with his pets, have all heated up, saying it’s become “like an oven”.

In his living space, Spiteri houses a total of four dogs, four cats, two agora rabbits, and several canary birds, explaining how the rabbits and cats are all used to being under the AC.

“I live in Birkirkara. It’s been 16 hours now without any electricity. The freezer is defrosting, and all the raw food for dogs and our own food will be thrown away,” he said.

Now, he has managed to solve the problem temporarily, having no choice but to rent some small generators so that he can keep his pets safe.

“I went to rent some small generators so that at least I can use some fans on my pets after, last night, we slept on the terrace,” he said.

The athlete often campaigns for animal rights, having recently raised over €50,000 for Malta’s stray animals through a recent challenge in Brazil.

Birkirkara is just one of the many towns all over the Maltese islands experiencing prolonged power cuts, as Enemalta assures that repairs are currently underway.

This is all happening as Malta is experiencing it’s first (and possibly last) serious heatwave for the summer, with temperatures soaring as high as 42 degrees.

Have your pets been affected by the power cuts?
