Watch: Neil Agius Begins Epic 100-Mile Swim – A Record-Breaking Feat Sets Sail
Ultra-endurance swimmer Neil Agius has officially set off on the epic 100-mile swim, set to shatter world records through its completion.
Agius set off from Mallorca and it is predicted that he will be back on land in Ibiza in around three days.
The world-first record attempt at the longest unassisted, current neutral, non-stop open water sea swim ever will definitely be one for the books – and with 10 months of preparation and training, Agius set off in the best of spirits.
The team has estimated that Agius’ arms will have to put in around 175,000 strokes to get him where he needs to go – and they’ll be doing so in support of a cause centered around a better environment.
By the end of it, he would have swam the whopping distance of 160km.
Last night, shortly after announcing that his phone has been passed on for his team to manage updates, a 12-hour countdown commenced, assuring that Agius is well prepared, both physically and mentally, for the feat.
The former olympian is using the swim to raise awareness and help lobbying efforts aimed to ensure that governments sign up for and properly implement the United Nations Treaty of the High Seas – which was adopted in New York on June 19th, establishing area-based management tools for ocean preservation.
Agius is also working with NGO Wave of Change Malta to raise awareness about plastic waste and pollution at the local level – and encourage people to embrace change.
With Lovin Malta teaming up with Agius’ team as official media partners, you can expect updates from time to time during the journey.
