Watch: Pack Of Rats Search For ‘Rotting Food’ In St Julian’s From ‘Avoided’ Organic Bins, Residents Allege
St Julian’s seems to be grappling with a rat problem, with footage sent to Lovin Malta showing packs of the rodents swarming around organic bins that have been left out for at least 24 hours, a resident alleged.
Kelly MacDonald, a frustrated resident, reached out to the newsroom to explain the situation in Triq Charles Sciberras.
She alleged that since the new waste collection system was implemented earlier this year, the rubbish collection system on this road has been working inefficiently, and despite residential reports, nothing has been done to improve it.
“The rubbish collectors are avoiding our road on all days the organic bags are due to be collected,” she explained to Lovin Malta. “The organic bags sit out for a minimum of 24 hours, attracting rats and other pests who tear open the bags, leaving the rotting food spread across the pavement and street.”
“The following day when either recycling or black bags are to be collected- the organic bags are added to the same truck thereby entirely defeating the purpose of separating rubbish in the first place.”
Kelly went on to claim that the residents of the block she resides in, as well as those in the neighbouring block, have complained about the issue to the Local Council, receiving “little or no response”.
“We have now collected video evidence and will be forwarding this to whoever we can to ensure that this issue is solved once and for all.”
“In doing so, I hope the blatant discrepancies in this new waste collection system are highlighted; starting from the contractor’s accountability, the lack of enforcement and/or follow through from the Local Councils to the obviously fake waste separation process being promoted in which separation isn’t actually happening.”
Lovin Malta has reached out to the St Julian’s local council on this issue, however, the newsroom is yet to receive a reply.
