Watch: ‘People Stopped Having Weddings Here Because Of Tables Outside’ – Gozitan Archpriest
Tables and chairs situated inconveniently in St George’s Square around the Basilica of Rabat, Gozo have actually deterred couples from getting married in that church, even though that’s what they wanted.
This information came to light earlier this week during a sermon held by Archpriest Joseph Curmi who further said that these obstructions have made it difficult for people to enter funerals.
“Is this dignity?” he asked.
Curmi appealed to his listeners to make their voices heard in the hopes that authorities would address the situation.
He called for them to attend a press conference on Saturday at 11am with Moviment Graffitti which he thanked for dedicating time and effort to this and other causes that people “don’t want to show their faces on”.
This comes a couple of months after journalist Mark Lawrence Zammit told Lovin Malta about a surreal situation in which he had to manoeuvre around tables and chairs while trying to enter his grandmother’s funeral.
Meanwhile, President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono also weighed in on the discussion, saying that “commerce has invaded our streets” and that enforcement is what’s sorely lacking.
