Addressing the European Parliament, MEP Peter Agius expressed how seven years after Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination, the Labour government is still operating from a “business-as-usual” mode.

In the maiden speech made by the newly-appointed member of the European Parliament, he called on Europe to strengthen the people’s right to good governance.

“In Malta Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered to hide the truth, and yet everyday Daphne’s heirs continue to boldly face threats and abuse of power to expose corruption,” Agius said.

“Let’s strengthen them. This Parliament will give the tools. We now need the European Commission to enforce these tools against corrupt governments.”

Claiming that the government is still in business-as-usual mode, Agius expressed how the public inquiry that followed Daphne’s assassination was not implemented.

“A Public Inquiry called for radical changes to our laws, and yet, these calls fell on deaf ears. The Inquiry was not implemented.”

Agius said he is now hopeful that new European laws including the Media Freedom Act and an upcoming European Anti-Corruption Law that will strengthen the hand of people of good will to face corruption in Malta and Europe.

“Europe is finally growing its teeth with these laws. We now expect the European Commission to grow the courage to bite,” MEP Agius concluded.
