Watch: Teen Girl Pulled To Safety In Dramatic Rescue By Police In Mosta
A girl was rescued by the police after being trapped in a residential building due to heavy smoke coming from communal areas in Mosta.
Footage captured by a body-cam shows a highly dramatic scene- thick smoke rising from the block’s communal entrance, climbing upwards and shouting in the street and a very tense atmosphere.
The exclusive video obtained by TVM News shows two officers from the Rapid Intervention Unit rushing in, entering the penthouse and rescuing the girl who was trapped inside the building. She was unable to descend the communal staircase because it was filled with smoke.
Her mother and father, who were not at home at the time, arrived at the scene in a state of great panic. Their only thought was that their daughter was alone in all that heavy smoke, which appears to have been caused by a fault in the lighting fixtures.
Without hesitation, the two officers- Christopher Debrincat and Christian Debono acted immediately to intervene.
“They told us that the girl was in the penthouse. When they arrived, what state were they in? They were in a state of great panic. They didn’t start by telling us how old the girl was. They simply began saying, “I have the girl, the girl is there,” Debrincat said.

Debono recalled the process of getting the girl out of the property: “We saw all the smoke when we opened the door a little. The sergeant waved the piece of cloth, perhaps to clear some of the smoke. I stayed outside waiting for him, while the sergeant went in and came out with her in the penthouse.”
Debrincat said that he “asked her not to leave me and to stay with me. To hug me and not let go, and she held my hand tightly so I could find the way out. I followed the light from my colleague who was at the door, and we got outside. When we reached the terrace, I started signalling and shouting to my colleagues.”
Debono went on to say that he was satisfied that they managed to save a person who could have suffocated on smoke. He also said that when they descended together with the girl, we handed her over to her parents. When they saw how her mother hugged her, they realised that they reached their goal.
Both police officers went on to praise the Civil Protection Department’s work in controlling the fire.
Well done to all involved in the rescue operation!
