Watch: The Last Man Standing – Maltese Athlete Runs For 28 Hours In An Incredible Test Of Endurance
Maltese athlete Marko Bezzina was crowned the winner of an incredible test of endurance for which he ran 187.77 kilometres in 28 hours.
I Endured Events hosted Malta’s only Backyard Ultra which is the island’s longest endurance event. It is a test of physical and mental fortitude in a format designed for anyone and everyone; from the casual runner to the elite.
All the competitors needed to do was run one more lap… until they couldn’t.
A Backyard Ultra is a race with no official end. It’s a last-person standing challenge.
A 6.7 kilometre – which is known as a yard – run begins every hour, and the competitors must finish that distance within the 60 minutes in order to run again.
Fail to return within the cut-off time or choose not to go out again, and you are eliminated. The race continues until only one person completes a full yard.
And that athlete was Bezzina who ran a total of 28 yards in a grueling 28 hours. Second place went to José Natera.
A video posted by the event shows Bezzina nearing the end of his final victory lap where he was greeted with a hug and a crowd of cheering bystanders, including other I Endured runners. He proudly held up a Maltese flag painted with several signatures, presumably of local participants.
This impressive event happens annually and it started on 9th December at 9am at Żonqor with different loops for the day and night.
Well done Bezzina!
