Watch: ‘This Isn’t A Race Track’ – Footage Of Modified Car Speeding Up Coast Road Sparks Controversy

A video of a driver’s perspective as he (illegally) races up the Coast Road is currently making the rounds online and sparking controversy, especially amid growing concerns about the safety of Malta’s roads.

In the short clip, the driver can be seen overtaking a car just before the hill going up to Pembroke begins, very quickly shifting gears as his modified car speeds up the scenic road.

Cars whizz past as the vehicle – decked in a racing set-up and described by the car enthusiast page as a “monster” – racks up speed and makes it halfway up the hill within seconds.

In the couple of weeks since it’s been uploaded, the clip has amassed over 20,000 views, but as Malta’s roads continue to claim more victims, the comments have gradually moved from admiration to complete shock.

“For God’s sake, don’t do this on our roads,” one comment read. “This isn’t a race track!”

Another comment pointed at the recent death of a 17-year-old girl on Malta’s roads, saying it was “shameful” that the person recording this was “doing such lawbreaking in broad daylight”.

But there’s been pushback from the page which originally posted the video, with the admin justifying the clip by saying everything from it’s sped up to it being “AI-generated, not real”.

It also appears as if the video started going viral today.

A number of people who sent the video to Lovin Malta expressed their disgust with the clip, saying that even if it was sped up, the glorification of such clips – described by the page that uploaded it as “raw, pure art” – is definitely unacceptable.

This is especially considering that Malta is going through another particularly fatal year on the roads, with May alone already seeing four traffic accident deaths.
