Watch: Widespread Opposition Mounts Against Malta’s Planning Reform Bills

This morning, a large crowd assembled in Valletta to express their opposition to the government’s proposed planning legislation, rallying under the slogan “Justice for Our Land: Kill the Bills!”
The march set off from the Law Courts, proceeded down Republic Street to the Triton Fountain, and culminated at Castille Square outside the Prime Minister’s offices, where speakers addressed the gathering.
Representing more than 70 organisations, protesters voiced fears that the reforms could wreak havoc on communities across Malta and Gozo. They demanded the bills’ withdrawal and condemned what they characterised as a lack of genuine public consultation.
Speakers cited concerns over rampant development, the erosion of green and public spaces, and the undue sway of powerful developers. Many described the proposed laws as a “developers’ wishlist,” accusing the government of favouring private interests at the expense of community welfare.
Activists also warned the legislation could overburden infrastructure, jeopardise mental health, and weaken transparency in decision-making. They insisted on robust environmental assessments and construction limits aligned with local capacity.
Organisers stressed that today’s protest is only the first in a series, pledging ongoing resistance unless significant amendments are made. Citizens were urged to set aside political divisions and unite in defence of public land, community interests, and sustainable development.
On social media, Moviment Graffitti posted an image from the protest, accompanied by a message: “They were wrong to think we could be stopped. Today, the people made it clear that they are a force to be reckoned with. ĠUSTIZZJA GĦAL ARTNA. Kill the Bills. The fight continues.”
