‘We Intend To Sue’: American Couple Denied Abortion In Malta To Take Legal Action Against Government
The American couple that made international headlines after being denied a necessary abortion in Malta has expressed that it is planning to sue the Maltese government.
Andrea Prudente and her partner went through a majorly traumatic event, after having to be airlifted to Spain to undergo her pregnancy termination after being denied one despite major health risks.
“Once we’re home and have dealt with the wreckage, we will take any action available against Malta,” Prudente’s partner Jay Weeldreyer told Times of Malta.
“This was… inhumane and we want to do what we can to prevent it from ever happening again. We intend to sue.”
Weeldreyer also criticised Maltese politicians for allowing their personal beliefs on abortion to lead to women not having complete autonomy over their own bodies.
Prudente, who was 16 weeks pregnant, suffered serious medical problems while on holiday in Malta and was told by doctors that her placenta had become partially detached and there was “zero chance” her pregnancy would be a success.
She said Malta’s medical staff advised her that her only options were to wait for the foetus’s heartbeat to stop or for her to develop an infection, after which they could terminate the pregnancy.
Since then, many have spoken out, with MEP Cyrus Engerer also pointing out that every woman in the EU should have the same access to healthcare such as abortion.
Abortion in Malta is illegal in all cases, as the island has one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the world and is the only country in the European Union to prohibit abortion entirely.
