‘What’s Next?’: EU Hosting Fourth Edition Of European Gender Equality Week
The EU Parliament (EP) will host the European Gender Equality which will consist of a number of interesting debates discussing what’s next in this field.
“Gender equality and equity are a shared responsibility that we must embrace in every facet of our work. I am extremely proud to see that every year this important initiative gains more and more interest, not only within the European Parliament, but also among other EU institutions, agencies, and national parliaments.”
This is the fourth time the Parliament has organised such a week and the theme of this year’s edition is “Gender Equality: What’s Next?”
EP committees and delegations will hold a series of discussions and public hearings between the 23rd and 29th October.
Some of the main events include a discussion with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation on women in agri-food systems organised by the Fisheries Committee. This will take place on Monday afternoon with a main focus will be on gender equality in fisheries and aquaculture.
Meanwhile, the International Trade Committee will observe the impact of EU trade policies on gender the following morning, and the Subcommittee on Public Health will discuss women, power, and cancer.
Similarly, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy will consider ways to make the transition to clean energy gender-equal.
Some other events, this time organised by the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee, include a discussion on the challenges ahead for women in finance and economics alongside the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on Tuesday.
As well as a presentation on the findings of the 2023 Gender Equality Index by the Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality on the same day. This year’s index is focussed on a socially fair transition to the Green Deal.
This initiative was started four years ago by the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee four years ago and in 2022, it held discussions on similar topics as well as, inter alia, combating gender-based violence at EU-level, the risks climate change poses to gender equality, and equal pay for equal work.
Are you looking forward to seeing the outcome of these discussions?
