White Taxis Call For Designated Pick Up Point At Malta International Airport

The Malta Taxi Licensed Association (MTLA) and the Light Passenger Operators Association warned that the vehicle congestion at Malta International Airport is becoming a “serious issue.”

“As we approach the peak of the summer season, the situation at the airport is critical. It is affecting not only vehicle movement but also the experience and safety of passengers,” the associations wrote in a statement.

They went on to blame the traffic on “a lack of proper planning and decisions that should never have been taken,” adding that previous discussions with the relevant authorities have failed to deliver improvements or results.

Earlier this morning, the white taxi operators have proposed to move the pick up point for tourists 260 metres away from the arrivals terminal to a designated pick-up point near the Kirkop tunnel. MTLA is proposing that the designated area would offer up to 70 parking spaces including charging points for electric vehicles, rather than the 10 parking pick-up points there is currently at the arrivals terminal.

The white taxis are at a disadvantage due to the “unregulated presence of Y-plate vehicles” at Malta International Airport, claimed MTLA. It went on to say how this proposal would reinstate fair competition, uphold the worth of an airport taxi licence, enhance traffic flow, and lessen passenger misunderstanding.

Apart from the proposal, MTLA also requested Transport Malta to implement geofencing technology, which uses GPS technology to indicate the boundaries of an area on a map, to “monitor and regulate vehicle activity within the designated airport zone”.
