Yesterday’s Wied Għomor grass fires were controlled by 14 fire fighters in San Ġwann.

The Civil Protection Department (CPD) was called at 2.15pm and when the first firefighters arrived, they saw that the fire was spreading onto several patches. They called the CPD control room asking for back up while trying to prevent the fire from spreading further.

When more firefighters arrived, the whole team started putting off all the fires and cooling down all the surrounding areas. Several small fire- fighting appliances were used to have deeper penetration in restricted areas whilst the water carrier was left outside to top up all the vehicles on site.

An ambulance was also called on site for standby in case of injury to the CPD team.

After several hours, the firefighters managed to control the situation and put out all the fires. At 9pm, the CPD control room was informed that the firefighters were going to return to their respective stations.

The firefighters were also assisted by members from the Emergency Fire and Rescue Unit and volunteers from the CPD. Seven fire and rescue vehicles were used, including the CPD drone to assist the emergency responders on site by continuously sending images of the area involved.

Shout out to their hard work!
