Woman Followed Home And Sexually Assaulted In Apartment Communal Area In San Ġwann
A woman making her way back home was followed by a complete stranger and sexually assaulted in the communal area of her apartment block in San Ġwann.
The victim had just finished shopping at a local supermarket when she was followed home by someone at the same shop.
“I went to buy groceries at around 6pm on 20th September, and as I was going inside my building, I turned around to close the door and a man was behind me,” the woman told Lovin Malta.
The man was white, wearing an orange shirt, around 175cm tall and had light brown hair.
At that point, the man asked for the woman’s number, and she told him no, as she is married. When she rejected his suggestion, he assured her that they can still speak, and she once again told him no.
“As I entered the elevator he entered with me, and I recognised his scent as the same one I had smelled in the supermarket,” she detailed.
“Then I asked if he lived in the building, and he said yes, and so I asked him to put the key in to activate the elevator,” she said.
As the woman continued to realise that he indeed did not live in her apartment block, she decided to press the elevator button for the doors to open, so that she could make a run for it.
“I opened the door and stepped out of the elevator and at that moment he grabbed me and started touching my ass and crotch and trying to throw himself on me,” she said.
“I pushed him off and did some self-defence tricks and he ran away. I managed to defend myself because I’m quite a strong girl who happened to know some self-defence, who knows if I wasn’t,” she expressed.
“He’s dangerous to the public and I want to protect all of the women that are out there, we should feel safe to go out and get our groceries,” she appealed.
The victim immediately placed a police report with the St Julian’s station shortly after it happened, and police confirmed with Lovin Malta that investigations are ongoing.
However, the victim expressed that she’s concerned about how far police have come on this case, as more than a week later, she hasn’t heard anything back, with the supermarket in question having not yet provided footage of the man.
Women experiencing attacks on Malta’s streets is far from a new occurrence, with perpetrators evading capture more often than not.
