Xjenza Malta Launches Rock Consolidation Works At Bighi Peninsula

Xjenza Malta, in collaboration with Infrastructure Malta, has launched rock consolidation works at the Bighi Peninsula to provide stabilisation measures to the rock faces beneath Esplora, the Science Centre and the offices of Xjenza Malta. The project will focus on stabilisation measures to the near-vertical cliff faces in the Lower Globigerina limestone that supports the foundations of these buildings and the surrounding landscaped areas.

The soft limestone at the site has deteriorated, resulting in fractured rock masses that pose risks to the structures above. The consolidation works are necessary to safeguard the site’s integrity while ensuring long-term stability for both the buildings and the environment.

For safety reasons, the area has been closed off during the works. Steel fencing and hoarding have been installed. This project, led by Xjenza Malta and its collaborators, will enhance safety and preserve the Bighi Peninsula—a site of historical and environmental heritage—ensuring its long-term sustainability for the benefit of visitors to the Centre and the community.

The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, highlighted the site’s importance for Malta’s rich history and educational sector. “We, the current generation, must preserve what belongs to us for future generations, as we are doing with this project. I look forward to seeing school children come here, touch, experience and taste this important part of our country’s rich history,” said Minister Clifton Grima.

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, emphasized the project’s national importance. “These works are of national significance, not only because they represent a collaborative effort between various entities, but also because they demonstrate the Government’s clear commitment to protecting the safety of our people, our historical heritage and our environment for future generations.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, underlined the importance of protecting the site. “This project ensures that we preserve not just part of our architectural and historical heritage but also an essential piece of our nation’s history for future generations,” stated Azzopardi Tanti.

Kalkara Mayor, Wayne Aquilina, welcomed the announcement. “I welcome the launch of this restoration project, which will join a series of infrastructural works already completed in Kalkara, including the restoration of the first part of the approach to Bighi, finished in 2021 and enjoyed by many today. The Bighi Peninsula is a historic and beautiful area in our town, and I look forward to continuing to preserve it to further enhance our locality.”

The Secretary of the Kalkara Heritage Association, Duncan Brincat, also expressed satisfaction with the project. “The Kalkara Heritage Association welcomes this important project, through which the remaining fortifications surrounding the Bighi complex’s coastline will be restored. Initiatives like these continue to safeguard Kalkara’s historical heritage, which is of national importance. We look forward to its completion while emphasising the need to also restore the historic baths along the same coastline.”

Also present at the press conference were Silvio Scerri, CEO of Xjenza Malta, Steve Ellul, CEO of Infrastructure Malta and architect Janice Borg.
