Y-Plate Drivers Gather In Pembroke To Protest Against €500 Illegal Parking Fine
Y-plate drivers and operators have gathered in Pembroke to protest a law that fines drivers €500 for parking illegally in public spaces, as well as the regulation that requires the vehicles to have adequate commercial garages, a protestor told Lovin Malta.
More generally, the drivers are protesting Transport Malta’s (TM) regulations on the industry as the authority has begun to crack down.
In fact, in the past few weeks, TM has been requesting operators within the cab industry to provide a list of all the persons who are employed with the operators, as well as the permits indicating that they own a commercial garage.
Operators are also required to send the transport authority documentation that proves that each driver has a driver’s tag.
They’re calling out both TM’s and ride-hailing platforms’ indifference to drivers’ needs, MaltaToday reported.
This comes after reports of cab drivers being fined this hefty sum after illegally parking for mere minutes to go to the bathroom or buy a drink.
The protest is happening right now in Pembroke.
