Ranked: These Are Malta’s Top 11 Social Media Platforms

A recent Misco report has revealed the latest social media trends in Malta, with WhatsApp emerging as the most popular platform among users.

The study shows that WhatsApp’s usage has been steadily increasing over the years, reaching a 97% usage rate in 2023, just ahead of Facebook, YouTube, and Facebook Messenger.

YouTube’s popularity has dipped slightly after a surge in usage during the pandemic years of 2020-2021.

Facebook remains a dominant platform, with a 95% usage rate in 2023, maintaining high usage across all age groups.

However, Instagram and TikTok have experienced significant growth in recent years.

Instagram’s popularity has been driven by females and 16- to 34-year-olds, with 56% of females and 80% of 16- to 34-year-olds using the platform daily. TikTok’s uptake is primarily driven by younger users, with nearly half  48% of 16- to 34-year-olds using the platform weekly.

Gender differences in platform preferences are also evident, with females more likely to use Pinterest (68% of women use it) and males more likely to use Twitter (35% usage) . Despite Facebook’s continued dominance in daily use, Instagram’s rising popularity means that 45% of internet users now access the platform at least once per day.
