The Young Maltese Singer About To Take The World By Storm
This could be Malta's biggest moment in music. We just don't know it yet.
Lauren Aquilina is not yet a household name in Malta. But the half-Maltese singer could soon become the island's biggest music star.
She's only 21 years old, but she's already opened for Taylor Swift, hit the iTunes top ten and had one of her songs used in a trailer for Downton Abbey.
The 'Kicks' singer is already smashing it with a record deal from Island/Universal Records. Her debut album 'Isn't It Strange' is out August 26th but it already sits at number one as a pre-order album in the UK.
In the words of one UK reviewer: "Lauren Aquilina is going to be huge – a supernova in the making. With astonishing speed and apparent ease she has already achieved so much in just a few short years."
If you're loving Lauren so far then it's time to get proper excited - her debut album drops August 26th! So with all this in mind, and the completely justifiable excitement we're feeling, let's take a look back at some of the amazing achievements she's had in her career so far.
1. Her songs sound beautiful, and their lyrics will hit you right in the feelings
‘Those hardest to love need it most; I watched our bodies turn to ghosts’
These were the opening lyrics to Lauren’s spellbinding first song ‘Fools’. The song itself was heart-wrenchingly beautiful, and hit scarily close to home. Also, Lauren was just 17 years old at the time.
‘The world may disapprove, but my world is only you, and if we’re sinners then it feels like heaven to me’
Lauren's second EP Sinners focused more on the 'plunge' every love affair requires, and it clearly resonated with a lot of listeners as the EP peaked at fifth on the iTunes charts.
‘I'll stay somewhere beneath, where my voice makes no noise, trapped in my body’
2. She draws in massive crowds when she tours
Lauren has performed to venues packed with fans in London, Manchester, Nottingham, Dublin and many more. She’s also played a sold-out show in Manhattan, and took part in a scores of festivals such as the ‘Reading and Leeds Festival’, ‘Dot to Dot Festival’, ‘Barn on the Farm’, and of course the ‘Barclaycard British Summer Time’ where she performed alongside some huge names in the industry like Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding.
3. She’s basically BFFLs with other singing-celebs
She’s hung out with Troye Sivan, was featured on Perez Hilton’s blog, and even been the supporting act for both Calum Scott and Taylor Swift! T-swizzle you guys - that's huge.
4. She’s been featured on some huge magazines
She’s been featured on LOOK Magazine, Bliss Magazine, Lovin Malta (cheeky) and even filmed a video with ELLE Magazine.
5. Her songs have been played on huge TV Shows
Her songs or covers have been played on Hollyoaks, and also on a Downton Abbey season teaser.
6. She has a massive following
7. She’s a genuinely good person
Lauren is a mental health awareness spokesperson, and has written on The Independent about her own struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. She also loves her fans, constantly giving away handwritten lyrics of her songs, and also featuring fan-made artwork for her album on instagram. You can also take part by drawing a picture which represents one of the tracks on her album, and uploading it on instagram with #isntitstrangeart. To make it even better, she’s hilarious, and her Twitter feed is proof enough. And she loves Bourbons… we rest our case.

You know you’ve made it when you’ve met Grumpy Cat.
9. She loves Malta, and Malta absolutely loves her
