10 Bed Dormitory In Pieta’ For €250 Gets Compared To Auschwitz Concentration Camp

As Malta’s property market becomes more and more “creative”, with people renting out everything from garages to vans, one dormitory in Pieta’ caught people’s attention – and not for the best of reasons.

“10 beds available, dormitory in Pieta’, sea view, €250” reads the advert alongside an image of the dorm in question. A balcony can be seen in the side of the photo, presumably leading to the sea views.

However, people had a lot to say about the ad, which seems to favour making a profit over respecting clients’ dignity.

“Jesus… until the government regulates everything, every rental place is going to turn into this,” said one person.

“This should be illegal… have we gone back to the 1600s?” asked another.

“Unfortunately, it feels like it’s a normal thing in the globalised world we are living in. A few years ago I saw a documentary about slave workers in Dubai living in these conditions. I said to myself “anzi Malta m’għanniex hekk’…” another person said forlornly.

Some people wondered what all the concern was about.

“Why should this be illegal? Not everyone can afford €1,000 a month.”

“…Maybe because people are not rabbits?” someone quickly responded.

One person even shared a photo of bunk beds used by prisoners inside Nazi German concentration camps, simply saying: “Modernised. And with sea view. So that should compensate.”
