A new record has been set in Maltese history today as Maria Farrugia is officially the oldest Maltese person ever.

Farrugia, born in Ħamrun when Malta was still a British colony is currently 111 years old – and three months and 25 days from her birthday on 7th March.

For perspective, she was born in 1912, meaning Farrugia has lived through both World Wars, Malta’s independence, all of Malta’s prime ministers and presidents, and 36 Eurovision entries.

It might be hereditary – with her mother living until she was 100 in 1982.

According to the islands’ Public Register, a set of detailed records that date back to the time of the Knights in 1539, Maria is the oldest person ever recorded, the last record holder being  Ġanni “Il-Ġiġa” Schembri born in 1757, who lived until the age of 108.
