12 Y-Plate Vehicles Confiscated For Being On The Road Without Permission
12 Y-plate vehicles have been confiscated by Transport Malta authorities for being on the roads without permission, the authority wrote on social media earlier this morning.
“We have made it clear that the abuse must stop. This principle will continue to guide us in our work in this sector in the time to come,” Transport Minister Chris Bonett wrote on social media.
This comes after a recent crackdown by TM which directed popular ride-hailing platforms Bolt, eCabs and Uber to suspend 900 Y-plated vehicles for not complying with garaging requirements.
Following these suspensions, TM authorities made unannounced inspections across Malta
While ride hailing apps suspended every vehicle that was identified by TM, 12 Y-plated vehicles were caught on the road without permission. These vehicles were subsequently confiscated.
A Transport Ministry spokesperson explained that some operators are abusing the law by registering fewer cars than they actually have in use. This means that an operator with garage space for 15 cars, for instance, would register just those 15 despite having 20 cars that are on the roads working for ride hailing platforms.
As a result, TM informed operators that unregistered cars will be confiscated and directed ride-hailing platforms to suspend such vehicles. Last night, it did unannounced inspections and found 12 cars on the road without permission.
