Fourteen cyclists who embarked on the 2023 LifeCycle Challenge successfully conquered the quest and crossed the finish line in Kuala Lumpur earlier this week.

Setting off from Bangkok in Thailand ten days previously, they cycled for 2,000 kilometres all the way to Malaysia to raise funds towards the plight of renal patients in Malta and raise awareness on renal health.

A true test in endurance, the LifeCycle Challenge requires cyclists to muster exceptional physical and mental strength in order to cycle for many hours every day for 10 consecutive days.

They are also required to tackle the terrain encountered along the way, which this year was accompanied by a trying tropical climate dominated by hot, humid and wet weather.

In the true spirit of the LifeCycle Challenge, the feeling of relief, pride and accomplishment at reaching the finish line was accompanied by a thought of solidarity and empathy for kidney patients whose suffering and hardships spurred on the cyclists during their challenge.

The founder of LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation and LifeCycle Challenge veteran Alan Curry expressed how they “take great pride in conquering this challenge, and the sensation is almost surreal”.

“Despite all the preparations, reaching the end is incredibly gratifying. However, in this moment of significant achievement, our hearts and thoughts are with kidney patients, whose enduring challenge is far from over,” he continued.

This year’s endeavour was the 23rd edition of the LifeCycle Challenge with the aim of raising about €200,000 to support renal patients, help fund medical research and raise awareness on renal health.

The LifeCycle Challenge is organised by the LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation and to this day remains the only voluntary organisation working in the field of kidney health in Malta.
