A 14-year-old foreign student learning English in Malta has accused her male host of entering her room as she slept to fondle her breast.

The incident, which happened at around 3am on Wednesday, occurred to the girl as she slept in the bottom bunk bed as another student slept in the top bunk bed.

“The host dad came into my room and he started touching me. I woke up, and as soon as I did, he went away,” the girl said in court today. “When he touched me, he was close to the middle of the bed, next to my legs and leaning over me. After he left, he returned soon after with towels, which he placed on the landing outside the room.”

She also explained how there was no door to the bedroom. The victim’s testimony was shown in court via video conference.

The accused was reportedly silent throughout the court case, shaking his heads at certain statements. Eventually, he started crying silently.

The victim explained how the man had pulled her grey, stretchy pyjama top down to squeeze her breast. Her top was examined by the prosecution and the defence.

She said that she couldn’t confirm which hand he had used, but she knew it was him because she woke up and “saw his face”.

“He was wearing a red T-shirt,” she described. “I was very scared. When he turned the light off, I woke up my friend on the upper bunk and I asked her to sleep with her.”

The victim was left shocked following the incident, saying this was the first time someone had touched her breast.

Since the student was set to leave the island shortly, the accused’s defence counsel requested bail, which was granted by Claire Stafrace Zammit, subject to a €300 deposit and to signing a bail book three times a week.

Lawyers David Farrugia Debono and Jean Carl Abela were defence counsel. The next sitting will take place on 12th September.
