Archbishop Emeritus Paul Cremona has passed away at the age of 79.

Born in Valletta on 25th January 1946, Mgr Cremona served as Archbishop of Malta from 26th January 2007 until his resignation on 18th October 2014 at the age of 68, making way for Archbishop Charles Scicluna.

In 2019, he celebrated 50 years of service in the Catholic Church.

In a statement, the Church confirmed that Mgr Cremona passed away at 11:55pm on Tuesday at Mater Dei Hospital.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna expressed sorrow at his passing, entrusting “such a faithful and loving pastor to the mercy of the Good Shepherd.”

Prime Minister Robert Abela said the state will co-organise his funeral along with the Church, while Opposition Leader Bernard Grech also paid tribute.

Mgr Cremona will be laid to rest on Saturday, with a Requiem Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral. Saturday has also been declared a national day of mourning.
