Maltese authorities are investigating an incident involving an 18-year-old Sardinian tourist, originally from Arzachena, who fell from the fourth floor of a hotel in Paceville.

The girl was on holiday with her boyfriend when the incident occurred during the night between Wednesday and Thursday of last week.

Rescue teams found the young woman beneath the hotel and she was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where she remains hospitalised. Fortunately, her life is not in danger, but she is awaiting surgery for back injuries.

Investigators have determined that her fall was partially cushioned by an awning, which may have saved her life.

Initial reports suggest the fall may have followed an argument with her boyfriend, who has since returned to Italy.

However, Maltese investigators have not ruled out other possibilities, including an accident, a voluntary act, or the involvement of third parties.

Police told Lovin Malta the incident is being treated as a domestic violence case and an individual was brought to court last Friday.

The investigation is being led by Magistrate Jean Paul Grech, with Maltese police working to determine the circumstances leading to the fall.

The young woman’s father, Silvano Chessa, has reached out to the Italian consular authorities in Malta for assistance.
