Around 180 people got injured every month of 2023 in Malta, worrying national statistics have revealed.

According to new NSO figures, 1,062 people got hurt at the workplace, including one who lost their life.

In one year, there were 9 fatalities at the workplace.

Some 235 people got injured doing physical work, while 227 were craft workers and 179 were in the services sector.

Roughly 14% of accidents happened in the manufacturing sector, while 13.5% in transport.

In terms of the most dangerous sector, the construction industry takes the cake, with 90% of work-related deaths happening within the ‘cowboy‘ industry.

During the public inquiry of Jean Paul Sofia, the 20-year-old who was crushed to death under a collapsed site at Kordin, the court presented statistics that 895 accidents have occurred to construction workers since 2018, raising questions about whether safety is considered.

To add insult to injury, a recent report by the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation and PILN confirmed that out of 49 cases of construction deaths between 2010 and 2022, just five saw court action taken.

How can Malta prevent more workplace injuries?
