Police have arrested a 19-year-old who assaulted a Bolt cab driver as he was driving him home in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The driver, Joseph de Celis, said he picked up the young man, a British national, at around 4am from a pick-up point in front of the Valletta police station.

He said the youth was blind drunk and that he smoked and reclined his feet on the cab dashboard during the trip, but that he didn’t tell him anything out of concern that he would react badly.

De Celis said that he drove the passenger to Mellieħa, where at one point the young man removed his seatbelt and started punching him.

“It lasted for seven minutes… I still had my seatbelt on and all I could do was honk the horn for help for seven minutes as he beat me up for no reason at all.”

Graphic photos of the state De Celis was left in after the assault were later shared by Raymond Ambrogio, an activist against multiculturalism and irregular migration.

A police spokesperson confirmed with Lovin Malta that a report was filed and that the passenger was arrested.
