A young student was too scared to leaver her home alone for two months after a stalker began harassing her.

The situation escalated to the point where the student’s father and the stalker got into a fistfight, with both men being injured.

Asif Ali, a 38-year-old man from Pakistan, was charged in court with harassment, stalking and slightly injuring the girl’s father.

In court, Inspector Eman Hayman explained the dynamics of the case, which goes back to November, when the student was first approach by Ali outside of Junior College.

He told he thought she was beautiful, and that he had been noticing her for a year.

She didn’t respond positively or negatively, the inspector said. A few days later Ali approached her again, and this time she made it clear she wasn’t interested.

A few days later, he got onto a bus with her.

After this incident, she began noticing the man appearing in her hometown of Luqa as well as her local shop and the area she’d go for private studies.

This is when she first reported Ali to the police. On the way back with her mother, she saw Ali again on the bus, and this time took footage of him on her mobile phone.

It seems Ali noticed he had been filmed, as he left her alone for a few weeks; however, by now the 19-year-old was scared and stopped leaving her home, only going out if accompanied by a family member.

After a while, she began to notice a particular car would follow her if she left the house, to the point that it would remain parked outside her home when she was inside.

On 2nd February, she realised it was Ali. This is when her father exited the house to speak to the stalker.

During the conversation, tempers rose and the two men got into a physical confrontation.

When police arrived at the scene, Ali was taken to a local clinic for his injuries. However, this is when the student told police that this was the man who had been stalking her for at least two months, leading police to arrest him in the clinic.

In court, Ali pleaded not guilty to the charges, with his lawyer Mark Mifsud requesting bail.

He said his client was a Muslim man who was interested in finding a partner of the same religion. However, he said that the recent incidents had taught hum that there’s a limit to courtship, and he was ready to follow the court’s orders.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras denied his request for bail and he was remanded under custody.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri appeared for the victim.
