The driver believed to be behind the hit and run death of a 51-year-old Żejtun resident is set to be charged in court today.

The man, believed to be a 21-year-old from Birżebbuġa, is expected to be charged with the involuntary murder of Antoine Degabriele as well as not stopping to help the victim after the fact.

The man was located by police after CCTV footage of the incident helped identify his vehicle, a Mazda Demio, and after police were alerted by an anonymous tip off. Broken parts of the car were also found at the scene and were used to link the vehicle to the crime.

The youth is currently being held in custody before his court appearance at 11.30 today.

The death of Degabriele came as a shock to his hometown community, with friends taking to social media to remember the best of the man.

“Rest in peace my friend,” one heartbroken friend said. “You were always such a joker, and it was always a ruckus wherever we went… I’m going to miss you my friend.”

“You didn’t deserve to die like that.”
