Luke Said, a former activist with the Gozitan environmental Għawdix, has announced that he will contest the next general election with the Nationalist Party.

“I am a son of Gozo, a 21-year-old youth, a proud Nadir and an unwavering defender of the land that formed me,” Said said,

“My heart beats to the rhythm of activism that carried me into politics, with the waves of this island. I have always had a steadfast commitment to protect Gozo. From the narrow alleys of Nadur to the cliffs overlooking our shores, I have walked and worked with a clear purpose.”

A geophysics student, Said said that his studies have taught him that “a complex world lies beneath the surface” and that the scientific method can help him “identify the truth beyond the noise”.

He said that joining the PN was a “natural step” for him.

“When it was in government, it invested heavily in Gozo – from introducing three new ferries and two new terminals, to updating many arterial nodes, to building new schools, to opening the Gozo university, to setting up local councils, to EcoGozo and the standardisation of public transport,” he said.

“These are just a few of the PN government’s investments that are still raping fruit to this day. Without a doubt, the PN faced challenges as all other administrations did, and certain decisions – such as its Fort Chambray plans and the 2006 local plans – are debatable. However, the most important thing is for us to learn from the past so as to ensure that the future development of Gozo is sustainable and future-looking.”

He urged disillusioned youths and people who feel voiceless to join his campaign.

“I won’t seek to be different for its own sake, but because Gozo deserves better. I will never sell Gozo’s soul for short-term profit or let special interests have a louder voice than the public. I want to see a Gozo where no one is left behind and where growth isn’t only measured by numbers but by our quality of life.”
