2,100 Bags Of Waste Are Collected From Comino In Summer… Every Week
Comino, a “must-visit” for any tourist landing on the Maltese isles, is generating at least 2,100 bags of waste… every single week during the peak summer months.
This was revealed by the Gozo Ministry, who boasted that Santa Marija Bay and Blue Lagoon are being cleaned “three times a day” during the summer months, so that is can be “enjoyed by everyone”.
Glaring questions arise, however, as to how the government is implementing sustainable tourism in a protected area already plagued by intense human activity.
In June alone, the Ministry said, 21 tonnes of waste were collected. That’s around three and a half times the weight of an elephant being collected in garbage.
Activists have warned about over-tourism on the small island, leading to Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo promising that 65% fewer deckchairs will be set up on Comino..
How can Comino become more sustainable?
